What is a community garden?

It started with the Honolulu Recreational Community Garden Program (HRCGP) in 1975 with the intent of providing citizens with access to participation in gardening, especially those who would not otherwise have access to the soil, and to serve community members whose recreational needs are not met by athletic, craft, and other traditional park facilities and activities. The program has since grown to include 11 community gardens with over 1200 plots. Learn more of its program.

How can I join the community garden?

Any resident of O‘ahu, 18 years old or older, who does not already have a community garden plot, is eligible to apply. Applications are considered on a first-come first-served basis, or on a numerical basis if there is a waitlist. The City and County of Honolulu government handles the waitlist. What kind of commitment is required if I am assigned a plot?

Accepted Answer

As soon as you are assigned a plot, you are expected to start gardening within 2 weeks. Most of our gardeners tend to their plot at least 2-3 days a week, but your commitment will depend on your gardening style.

Additionally, gardeners may be required to attend monthly community garden organization meetings and cleanups. This will depend on your garden’s bylaws.

For MCG, gardeners are required to attend 4 monthly meetings and 2 monthly clean-ups per year. This schedule can be found here. Annual garden dues are expected to paid in April, and are $20 for 12 months.
