Community Gardening Program

Makiki Community Garden is Honolulu's first recreational garden. The Community Recreational Gardening Program began in 1975 under Mayor Frank Fasi. The program's purpose is to provide people living in Honolulu's densely populated communities access to garden plots. There are currently ten community gardens throughout O'ahu.

Rules

All gardeners agree to be subject to and abide by the following:
  • C&C of Honolulu, DPR, 1984 Amended Rules and Regulations for Community Recreational Gardening Program
  • C&C of Honolulu, DPR, Community Garden Handbook (Revised 2011)​
  • Makiki Community Garden Association (MCGA) Rules and Regulations (January 2025)

Honolulu Recreational Community Gardening Program Public Hearing Notice for New Rules 
An in-person and virtual public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, January 28, 2025 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Foster Botanical Garden’s Conservatory Classroom located within the historic 14-acre garden at 180 N. Vineyard Blvd. in Downtown Honolulu. The virtual meeting will be held via Zoom, and can be accessed using the following link: bit.ly/gardenhearing

Location

Makiki Community Garden is located within the Makiki District Park at 1527 Ke'eaumoku St. in Honolulu. Parking for the garden is best accessed on the Makiki St. side of the park.
